Hike to Kumbel Peak via Gorelnik, Three Brothers, and Kok-Zhailau

Kumbel Peak is one of the most recognizable summits of the Trans-Ili Alatau near Almaty. One of the most interesting ascent routes starts at Medeu, passes through the Gorelnik Gorge and Trapezia Pass, and then descends via the Three Brothers rocks and the Kok-Zhailau area.

This route allows hikers to avoid returning along the same trail. In a single hike, you can see a spruce-covered gorge, mountain waterfalls, open alpine slopes, a rocky ridge, and green meadows above the city.

The circular route from the «Medeu» bus stop and back is approximately 21 km long. The total elevation gain reaches about 1,600 m, the summit is located at approximately 3,230 m, and completing the route with rest stops usually takes 9-10 hours.

How to climb Kumbel Peak via Gorelnik

From the «Medeu» bus stop, follow the road uphill toward Shymbulak. The entrance to the Gorelnik Gorge is located above the sports complex, near the point where the Gorelnik River flows into the Malaya Almatinka River.

The first part of the route passes through the grounds of a former tourist base. The trail then enters the gorge, crosses forested sections, and gradually gains elevation along the river.

Along the way, you can visit the lower and upper Gorelnik waterfalls. They are located close to each other, but visiting them adds time to an already long route. The water flow is strongest in spring and early summer, although wet rocks and remaining snow make the approaches slippery.

Above the waterfalls is a rocky viewpoint known as Eagle's Nest. It offers views of the gorge and the surrounding slopes. Beyond this point, the forest gradually thins out and the trail enters the alpine meadow zone.

Ascent to Trapezia Pass

The most physically demanding section begins in the upper part of Gorelnik. At the trail junction, it is important not to turn toward the Titov Lakes but to continue toward Trapezia Pass and the Kumbel Ridge.

The ascent becomes steeper. Some sections have scree, loose stones, and poorly defined trails. Trekking poles are especially useful after rain or when patches of snow remain. It is easy to lose the route in fog, so you should not rely only on the tracks left by other hikers.

From the pass, the route turns onto the ridge. Continue toward the summit, following the main trail and the safest line of the ridge. Just before the summit, the trail may divide into several alternative paths.

What can be seen from Kumbel Peak

In clear weather, the summit offers panoramic views of Almaty, Medeu, Shymbulak, and the central part of the Trans-Ili Alatau. Big Almaty Peak, the Tuyuk-Su area, and the neighboring summits are clearly visible.

For many years, a sign displaying an exaggerated elevation stood on the summit. This caused confusion in route descriptions. The elevation shown on the sign refers to Kumbeltau, located farther along the ridge, rather than the popular tourist summit of Kumbel.

The ridge is exposed to the wind and provides almost no shelter. For a longer rest, it is better to choose a protected spot slightly below the summit.

Descent via the Three Brothers rocks

After the summit, the route descends along the ridge toward the Three Brothers rocks. These are natural rock formations that resemble three figures standing next to each other when viewed from a distance. The name comes from the shape of the rocks rather than from a confirmed historical legend.

The viewpoint near the rocks offers excellent views of Almaty, Kok-Zhailau, and the ridge already crossed. Climbing directly onto the rock formations is not recommended without experience. Some sections have steep edges, crumbling rocks, and awkward exits.

Below the Three Brothers, the trail becomes more distinct and gradually descends toward the forest and the open meadows of Kok-Zhailau.

Descent via Kok-Zhailau to Akbulak

Kok-Zhailau is a broad mountain area between the Small and Big Almaty gorges. Its name is usually translated as «green summer pasture». The area offers views of the city, Medeu, Shymbulak, and the surrounding ridges.

Several trails leading to different parts of Almaty meet at Kok-Zhailau. To return to the «Akbulak» bus stop, choose the eastern descent toward Prosveshchenets and Gornaya Street. The western route through the Kazachye Gorge leads to Akbulak and takes hikers significantly farther away from the starting point.

The descent through Kok-Zhailau is technically easier than the ascent to Trapezia Pass, but after a long hike it places considerable strain on the knees. Trekking poles help maintain stability on rocks and steep forest sections.

Interesting facts and history

The name «Kumbel» is associated with the Kazakh words «құм», meaning sand, and «бел», meaning back or ridge. The place name is therefore often interpreted as «sandy» or «dry ridge». Its northern spurs have no permanent snowfields clearly visible from Almaty.

Gorelnik played an important role in the development of mountain tourism in the city. In 1932, a tourist shelter with overnight accommodation was built at the mouth of the river. In 1936, the «Gorelnik» tourist base was opened there to train hikers and mountaineers. As a result, part of the modern route follows trails used by Almaty mountain groups as early as the last century.

The Three Brothers rocks are erosional remnants on the Kumbel Ridge. The softer surrounding rocks gradually eroded under the influence of water, frost, and wind, while the more resistant rock formations remained.

Kok-Zhailau was historically used as a summer pasture. Today, popular routes between the Small and Big Almaty gorges pass through the area.

Hike difficulty

The route to Kumbel Peak via Gorelnik should not be considered an easy walk. It is suitable for hikers who have already completed long mountain routes with significant elevation gain and can move confidently across scree slopes.

Main difficulties:

• a long and steep ascent to Trapezia Pass;

• a poorly defined trail in some sections;

• scree and loose rocks;

• an exposed and windy ridge;

• rapidly changing weather;

• a long descent after the summit.

During snowy periods, the upper part of Gorelnik and the slopes of the pass may be exposed to avalanche danger. This route should not be attempted without winter hiking experience, appropriate equipment, and an assessment of current avalanche conditions.

What to bring

For the hike, you will need broken-in trekking boots, trekking poles, a waterproof jacket, an insulating layer, headwear, sunglasses, a first-aid kit, a fully charged phone, and a power bank.

There are no reliable water sources on the ridge. It is better not to depend on collecting water along the route, and water from streams should only be used after filtration or disinfection.

Start early in the morning. If the weather deteriorates as you approach the pass, or thunderclouds, strong winds, or fog appear, it is safer to turn back and descend along the familiar trail.
