Ayusai Waterfalls → Visitor Center → GES-2 bus stopDescription
The hike to Ayusai Waterfalls is a popular route in Ile-Alatau National Park near Almaty. Ayusai Gorge is located above the dam, along the road toward Big Almaty Lake. The Ayusai Visitor Center is located near the beginning of the main trail, and a short route to the waterfall cascades starts from there.
The name Ayusai is commonly translated as “Bear Gorge.” The gorge is known for its dense forest, cool mountain river, and several waterfalls of different heights. The upper waterfall is considered the tallest and is located deeper inside the gorge.
What Makes the Route to Ayusai Waterfalls Interesting
The route follows a scenic mountain trail through spruce trees, rocky areas, and deciduous forest. The first waterfall is located approximately 700 m from the entrance to the gorge. The trail then continues toward the next cascades while gradually gaining elevation.
The hike is especially interesting because you can see several waterfalls in one day, walk along the river, and relax away from the noise of the city. Some sections may include rocks, steep climbs, and water crossings, so hikers should stay attentive.
Route from the GES-2 Bus Stop
When starting from the GES-2 bus stop, you first follow the road through Big Almaty Gorge to the turnoff and the Ayusai Visitor Center. The route then continues along the trail uphill through the gorge toward the waterfalls.
The total distance from GES-2, including visits to the main waterfalls and the return journey, is approximately 12 km. The elevation gain is about +620 m. The exact figures may vary slightly depending on which waterfall the group reaches and which trail is used for the return.
Who the Hike to Ayusai Waterfalls Is Suitable For
The hike to Ayusai Waterfalls is suitable for active beginners, hikers with basic physical fitness, and those who enjoy one-day routes. The short option from the visitor center is easier, while the route from GES-2 is noticeably longer and requires more time.
For the hike, it is recommended to bring trekking shoes with good grip, water, a snack, a windbreaker, and a rain jacket. Trekking poles can be useful on ascents, descents, and sections near the river.
Why Choose the Ayusai Route
The main advantage of the route is its natural variety. It combines a mountain river, forest, rocky sections, and several waterfalls. Hikers can choose a suitable route length: a short walk from the visitor center or a full hike from the GES-2 bus stop.
The hike to Ayusai Waterfalls is a great option for an active weekend, a photo walk, and an introduction to the routes of Big Almaty Gorge.
