Description

Medik Peak in Almaty is a goal for experienced hikers who want something more demanding than a short walk to the Gorelnik waterfalls. The route allows hikers to reach three summits in one day: Chasovaya, Pribornaya, and Medik. It crosses a wooded gorge, open slopes, and a long watershed ridge.

Medik Peak is approximately 3,492 metres high. Maps and hiking reports also give elevations between 3,475 and 3,485 metres. A figure of 3,578 metres is sometimes quoted, but this probably refers to another point on the ridge or an inaccurate satellite measurement.

In dry summer weather, the ascent does not involve technical mountaineering. The main challenges are the elevation gain, unstable rocks, repeated height changes along the ridge, and the long descent. Snow, ice, or poor visibility can significantly change the nature of the route.

Where is Medik Peak?

The peak is located on the Gorelnik spur, which separates Gorelnik Gorge from the Malaya Almatinka River valley. Chasovaya, Pribornaya, Medik, Mynzhylky, the Tuyuk-Su Gates, and other high points lie along this ridge.

The main summit of Medik lies south of Pribornaya. Gorelnik Gorge and the Titov lakes are visible on one side. On the other are Shymbulak, the road to Mynzhylky, the Tuyuk-Su alpine camp, and the high-altitude cirque of the glacier of the same name.

The peak was named in the early 1960s. Its name is associated with students of the Almaty Medical Institute who practised mountaineering and climbed it from the Malaya Almatinka Gorge.

How far is Medik Peak from the Medeu skating rink?

The round trip is approximately 20-22 km when returning through Gorelnik Gorge. Descending via Pribornaya, the eastern branch of the ridge, and the Tuyuk-Su alpine camp results in a walking distance of approximately 22-24 km.

Some descriptions give a distance of 16 km. Such calculations usually start from the spring or Gorelnik visitor centre rather than the Medeu skating rink. The approach from Medeu adds several kilometres to the round trip.

The distance also depends on whether all three summits are visited. Reaching the saddle near Pribornaya and continuing directly to Medik makes the route shorter. Visiting Chasovaya requires covering an additional section of the ridge before returning south.

Even at approximately 20 km, this remains a demanding hike. The ridge involves repeated gains and losses of elevation, so the actual effort is greater than the simple elevation difference between Medeu and the summit suggests.

What is the route to Medik Peak via Gorelnik?

The main route is:

Medeu skating rink - Gorelnik visitor centre - waterfalls - Eagle’s Nest - Chasovaya Mountain - Pribornaya Mountain - Medik Peak.

There are two options for the return:

  • return through Pribornaya and Chasovaya to Gorelnik Gorge;

  • follow the eastern branch from Pribornaya to the training rocks, Tuyuk-Su alpine camp, Shymbulak, and Medeu.

Medeu skating rink - Gorelnik visitor centre

From the skating rink, climb along the road towards Shymbulak and reach the start of the trail into Gorelnik Gorge. Part of the route can be covered using the stairs and pedestrian shortcuts.

A hydrogen sulphide spring is located near the entrance to the gorge. The trail then enters the forest and follows the Gorelnik stream. This section is relatively gentle, but considerable elevation gain lies ahead, so avoid moving too quickly at the start.

The route from Medeu is longer than the version starting at the visitor centre. When planning the schedule, remember that this section must be covered again at the end of the day.

Gorelnik waterfalls and Eagle’s Nest

The Lower and Upper waterfalls are located farther up the gorge. The Upper Waterfall is approximately 20 metres high. Beyond it, the trail continues climbing through forest and open glades.

The next notable landmark is the Eagle’s Nest rock formation, which is used as a viewpoint. The Gorelnik Ridge followed by the rest of the route is clearly visible from here.

The trail temporarily follows the route towards the Titov lakes. Approximately 2-2.5 km beyond Eagle’s Nest, a large rock serves as a landmark for the turn towards the ridge.

Leave the main trail towards the rock massif and climb to the saddle south of Pribornaya. The trail is less distinct here, and the correct direction is easy to miss in fog.

Ascent to Chasovaya Mountain

To include Chasovaya in the route, turn north after reaching the ridge. The mountain is approximately 3,249 metres high. Some descriptions give elevations of 3,200 or 3,230 metres.

Chasovaya is the northernmost distinct summit on the Gorelnik Ridge. It offers views of Medeu, Shymbulak, Gorelnik Gorge, and the opposite slopes of Kumbel.

After visiting the summit, return south. Small rocky rises and unstable sections are found between Chasovaya and Pribornaya. Some rock pinnacles are easier to bypass using the visible trail instead of following the very top of the ridge.

Traverse to Pribornaya Mountain

Pribornaya is approximately 3,330-3,340 metres high. The summit is recognisable by the remains of surveying instruments and metal structures.

The mountain's name refers to the instruments installed at its highest point. It is a suitable place to rest before the final ascent.

The straight-line distance from Chasovaya to Pribornaya appears short. In practice, the crossing takes longer because of elevation changes, detours around rocky outcrops, and unstable scree.

Several routes meet near Pribornaya. A trail descends west into Gorelnik Gorge. The eastern branch leads to the training rocks and Tuyuk-Su alpine camp. The route to Medik Peak continues south.

Ascent from Pribornaya to Medik Peak

From Pribornaya, continue south along the watershed ridge. The summit is approximately 600-700 metres away horizontally, but the route continues to gain elevation.

The trail crosses grassy and scree-covered sections. Some rocks are unstable. Participants must maintain their distance and avoid moving directly above or below one another on steep slopes.

Medik Peak reaches approximately 3,492 metres. Its highest point is fully exposed to the wind. A long rest is only practical in stable weather.

The summit offers views of Gorelnik Gorge, the Malaya Almatinka Gorge, Shymbulak, the Tuyuk-Su alpine camp, Titov Peak, the Titov lakes, and the high summits of the glacial cirque.

What is the best way to descend from Medik Peak?

The clearest option is to return along the ascent route. The descent through the alpine camp is more varied but requires good navigation and knowledge of the eastern branch from Pribornaya.

Descent optionTotal distance from MedeuFeaturesSuitable for
Via Pribornaya, Chasovaya, and GorelnikApproximately 20-22 kmFamiliar trail and a second crossing of the ridgeA first trip on this route

Via Mynzhylky and the Tuyuk-Su GatesApproximately 25-30 kmLong traverse with additional summits and rock pinnaclesStrong, well-prepared groups only
Directly down the gullies to the alpine campNot recommendedSteep avalanche gullies and terrain exposed to rockfallNot a standard hiking descent

Returning through Gorelnik Gorge

From the summit, descend to Pribornaya, continue towards Chasovaya, and then descend west into Gorelnik Gorge. The saddle near Chasovaya or an earlier descent before the summit can be used.

The route then joins the main trail near Eagle’s Nest. Hikers follow it past the waterfalls and spring before returning to the Medeu - Shymbulak road.

This option is easier to manage. The group has already seen the main junctions during the ascent and can estimate the remaining distance more accurately.

Descent through the Tuyuk-Su alpine camp

First return from Medik Peak to Pribornaya. A direct descent from the summit into the gullies above the alpine camp is not considered a safe hiking route.

At Pribornaya, turn onto the eastern branch of the ridge. The trail crosses a high point known as Pyatisotka, then descends past the training rocks to the Tuyuk-Su alpine camp.

The upper part of the trail is faint. The grassy slope contains small steps and steep sections. The ground becomes slippery after rain.

From the alpine camp, follow the road down to Shymbulak. You can then continue on foot to Medeu. Using the cable car reduces the walking distance, but its schedule and availability must be checked in advance.

This is not a straightforward descent for beginners. It requires an offline map, sufficient daylight, and someone familiar with the trail.

Why should you not descend directly through a gully?

Steep gullies cut across the eastern slopes of Medik Peak and lead towards the alpine camp. Mountaineers and skiers use them in suitable conditions, but they are not standard hiking trails.

The gullies may contain rockfall hazards, wet grass, snow, and avalanche danger. Attempting to shorten the route without knowing the correct line can lead to cliffs.

The safer hiking option passes through Pribornaya and the eastern branch of the ridge. A direct descent from Medik to the alpine camp should not be included in a standard hiking route.

How difficult is the Medik Peak hike?

This is a challenging day hike. The main reason is an elevation gain of up to 2,000 metres over a distance of more than 20 km.

The climb from the gorge to the ridge crosses a steep grassy and scree-covered slope. On the ridge itself, hikers must bypass rocky outcrops and repeatedly lose elevation.

In dry, snow-free conditions, the route is usually completed without a rope. However, participants must be confident on scree, able to identify faint trails, and maintain their balance on steep terrain.

Before attempting this hike, it is advisable to complete a route of at least 18-20 km with 1,200-1,500 metres of elevation gain. A first long mountain hike should not be combined with a traverse of three summits.

Is acclimatisation necessary?

Medik Peak is below 3,500 metres, but much of the ridge lies above 3,000 metres. Some participants may experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, or unusual weakness at this elevation.

Good physical fitness does not guarantee a normal response to altitude. Several preparation hikes to 2,800-3,200 metres can be useful.

Do not continue ascending if symptoms worsen. The participant should stop gaining elevation and begin descending. Loss of coordination, confusion, or shortness of breath at rest requires emergency assistance.

Medication does not replace gradual acclimatisation. Its use should be discussed with a doctor.

When is the best time to go?

The best period for the hiking route is July, August, and the first half of September, when the ridge is more likely to be dry.

Snow may remain on shaded slopes in June. Overnight frost, ice, and fresh snow are possible in late September and October.

The slopes above Gorelnik and the alpine camp may be exposed to avalanche danger in winter and spring. A summer GPS track does not confirm the safety of a winter route.

Start early. It is advisable to reach Medik Peak before 13:00 and begin the descent immediately after a short break.

What can you see along the route?

The first section passes through the coniferous Gorelnik Gorge. It contains the Lower and Upper waterfalls, a mountain stream, and the Eagle’s Nest rock formation.

Chasovaya offers a northern panorama towards Medeu and Almaty. Pribornaya provides a clear view of the ridge leading to Medik.

The summit overlooks the Titov lakes, Titov Peak, Gorelnik Gorge, Shymbulak, and the Tuyuk-Su glacial cirque. Kumbel rises opposite the ridge.

When descending through the alpine camp, the route passes near the training rocks, where climbing and basic mountaineering skills are taught.

Interesting facts about the route

Chasovaya is the northernmost summit on the Gorelnik Ridge. Pribornaya was named after the surveying equipment on its summit. Medik was named in honour of medical institute students who practised mountaineering.

The ridge forms a natural watershed. Water from its western slopes drains into Gorelnik Gorge, while water from the eastern slopes flows into the Malaya Almatinka valley.

The three summits are close together, but the route between them cannot be judged by distance alone. Changes in elevation and rocky outcrops considerably slow progress.

Tourist sources give different elevations for Medik Peak. Figures between 3,480 and 3,492 metres are most commonly used for the modern summit. An elevation of 3,485 metres can be used as the main reference.

What should you bring?

Wear footwear with good grip on dirt, grass, and scree. Trekking poles help during the ascent and reduce strain on the knees during the descent.

Your backpack should contain a windbreaker, rain protection, an insulating layer, gloves, and a warm hat. Conditions on the exposed ridge differ from those at Medeu in both temperature and wind.

A headlamp, first-aid kit, emergency blanket, offline map, and charged power bank are essential. A helmet is useful on sections with unstable rocks.

There are no reliable water sources after reaching the ridge. Carry your main water supply from the start. Water from streams should be treated.

Conclusion

Medik Peak in Almaty via Chasovaya and Pribornaya is a challenging route of 20-24 km with up to 2,000 metres of elevation gain. For a first attempt, returning through Gorelnik is the safer option. Choose the alpine camp descent only when you have a GPS track, sufficient experience, and enough time.
